Back in April we whined complained about how syncing your Windows phone with Windows (the desktop operating system) took a few steps too many. You had to manually go out and find the software (ActiveSync for you XP users, Mobile Device Center for Vista and Windows 7).
Our cries have been heard.
Windows Mobile Driver Download
Jan 22, 2016 Hi, there appears to be an issue with downloading Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 Driver for Windows 7. The link is only available for VISTA. It does not download to my machine.
- I have an HP Ipaq rx1950, running Windows Mobile 5. After installing Windows 7, i can't get Mobile Device Center to work AT ALL. I have followed the directions at the beginning of this post several times, but to no avail. Installing WMDC 6.1 seems to fail, and says that the device driver update fails.
- Windows Mobile Device Center offers device management and data synchronization between a Windows Mobile-based device and a computer. For Windows XP or earlier operating systems, you must use Microsoft ActiveSync.
- Option 1: Update drivers manually. To get the latest driver, including Windows 10 drivers, you can choose from our list of most popular Mobile downloads or search our driver archive for the driver that fits your specific Mobile model and your PC’s operating system.

With the Release Candidate version of Windows 7 (that's Build 7100, for those keeping track at home), everything's taken care of for you. We'd heard as much from PocketNow but just had to try it ourselves. Here's my experience:
- Phil plugged in his trusty ol' Moto Q9h.
- Windows 7 downloaded and installed some drivers.
- Mobile Device Center was automatically downloaded and installed.
- Phil thrust his arms in the air in celebration, sounded a barbaric yawp and immediately began a post praising Microsoft's foresight.
OK, it's not perfect. There really are no dialog boxes telling you what's going on, and the process isn't as quick as I'd like. It took a couple of minutes to install the drivers and software, which in and of itself was fine. But there basically were no dialog boxes (other than the one saying drivers were being installed) to let the user know what was going on. Free whatsapp download for mobile. But we're not going to let that rain on our parade.
And for those of you wanting to try out the Release Candidate, it'll be available to the public on Tuesday.

Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update Windows 7
MitigationElf,
Mobile Device Center will install automatically once you plug your mobile device in.
If your device is not yet compatible, it may be necessary for you to wait untill your device's manufacturer releases the necessary support.
Please keep in mind that Windows 7 is still in testing, official support and adoption is to be expected by manufacturers at the time of release. Rami

Hi Rami,
I guess the point of my question was that Windows Mobile Device Center does NOT automatically install in Windows 7 when a compatible mobile device is plugged in. The T-Mobile wing is fully compatible with Windows 7. (to push the point a bit futher, documentation regarding Windows 7 states that anything compatible with Vista is also compatible with Windows 7 - but that is a question for a diferent thread.)
When I plugged my Wing in, Windows 7 did not even recognize that anything had been plugged in, let alone that it is a Windows Mobile 6.1 device.
I did, however, find a work-around. First, I found Windows Mobile Device center in the downloads section of Microsoft.com and installed it - it aparently does not come packed with Windows 7. Once I did the install then plugged the Windows Mobile 6.1 device back in, it was then discoverable.
Thank you for your help!
